Gone are the days when all it took to steal a pickup truck was drilling out the door lock and hot wiring it. Thieves don’t give up easily though, and they figured out new ways to defeat these systems. Modern Toyota anti-theft systems are quite effective. Luckily, the police recovered it – they found it at a loading dock about to be put into a shipping container with a bunch of other Toyota trucks. I also had a co-worker that had his beautiful black FJ Cruiser (manual, too!) stolen when he went to Montreal for a weekend.

It was clearly an organized plan by professionals. He also said that at least 2 neighboring Toyota stores had multiple trucks stolen that very same night. Tundras, Tacomas, 4runners, Sequoias, and FJ Cruisers were all being stolen and shipped overseas to places like the Middle East.Ī friend of mine works at a Toyota dealership and told me they had 4 Tundras and a Sequoia go missing one night. This was a big problem a few years ago here in Canada. Toyota trucks are often stolen and then shipped to other countries and sold. They’re likely to be worth fixing even when they’re worn out, so replacement parts are in high demand. On top of that, they are known to last for a really long time, making replacement parts more desirable.

The other reason is that many of their parts are interchangeable. Unfortunately, there are plenty of dishonest people out there that will do anything to make a buck.īeing popular in other regions of the world isn’t the only reason why Tacomas are stolen. But because their demand is so high, thieves are willing to put the effort in to snatch them. No more than any other modern pickup truck. The Tacoma isn’t particularly easy to steal. Because of this, many thieves want them – and they want them bad. Many parts are interchangeable with other Toyota models. The popularity of Toyota trucks is both a blessing and a curse. This is due to their demand and not a problem with security. They aren’t considered to be an easy target and there aren’t any stand-out issues that cause them to be stolen. Toyota Tacomas aren’t known for being easy to steal. There’s a huge demand for these little trucks but that comes with a downside – the combination of their popularity and high resale value makes them a target for theft. Might be way more helpful. The Toyota Tacoma is one of the most popular vehicles on the used market.

I was able to download the dealer installation manual which showed how everything plugged in. Now, if I were you, I would seriously try to figure out what security system it is that you are dealing with. I just bought some factory fob replacements and programmed them to the car's ECU after I removed the module. You were supposed to throw away the factory ones. For the Mazda, the security module came with its own fobs as they had an extra button for the system and only talked to the security module. If you do remove it, you may need new key fobs that are for cars that do not have the security system. If it's aftermarket, it will probably be a total hack job.

I bet Toyota would do something similar so it's easy for the dealer to install and not screw up. To remove it, I just unplugged the module at the ignition and the wiring harness, and plugged the wiring harness directly into the ignition (then snip all the other wires to get the module out). The security module plugged in there and then wires ran everywhere to locations for sensing things like opened doors. On my Mazda there was a wiring harness connector at the ignition.
